Finally, Free at Last

Today is a day of great celebration. More than that, today is a day of freedom and excitement. Today, the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade. For forty-nine years, pro-life activists have fought to defend the rights of the unborn. For forty-nine years, pro-life advocates have clashed tooth-and-nail with pro-abortion activists in the fight for the unborn. For forty-nine years, pro-life giants like Abby Johnson have compelled generations of pro-life advocates to stand up for what they believe in, to not be silenced by the corporate leftists and privileged elites. For forty-nine years, students in countless schools, colleges, and workplaces have had the courage to stand strong in their convicting beliefs, not giving in to the pressures of political idiocy by the left. For forty-nine years, countless mothers who have aborted received kind counseling with pro-life organizations, many of which are Christian. For forty-nine years, pro-life advocates of all different creeds, religions, and parties have joined together as comrades to champion the pro-life movement in the face of tragedy (9/11), adversity, and a global pandemic. But forty-nine years, millions of unwanted children were disposed of as if they were trash. For forty-nine years, countless young mothers have made the foolish error to park within the Planned Parenthood parking lot and enter into those doors, not knowing what grief lies ahead. For forty-nine years, public school systems and teachers have taught leftist propaganda, promoting abortion and promiscuity. For forty-nine years, the voices of pro-life activists have been silenced, threatened, and sometimes done away with altogether.

But that is about to change. Today, the Supreme Count has overturned Roe v. Wade. For forty-nine years, we have fought hard to champion the pro-life movement and to stop abortion. For forty-nine years, we have endured abuse from rich, millionaire Democrats; anchors with big pockets and big mouths; political tyrants; a clueless president; and many other significant figures. For forty-nine years, pro-life activists have fought for the rights of the unborn, freedom from abortion, and freedom for pregnant women. But now, after forty-nine years, we are officially in a post-Roe generation. The fight has been fought, the demons have been exposed, and the darkness has been shined upon. Now, without seeing fifty years, Wade has now been officially overturned. I cannot help but think of the late Dr. Martin Luther King's words from his famous speech, I Have a Dream:

"And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"" (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I Have a Dream).

Contextually, Dr. King is addressing segregation and the problematic laws in place during the 1960's. Yet, Dr. King's inspiring, powerful words apply just as well to the topic of abortion. In a sense, the unborn have been segregated, treated as unworthy by 'trained' clinicians. In a sense, the unborn have experienced demeaning nicknames like 'fetus', 'thing', 'unwanted', 'it', and 'trash'. These unborn children never had a chance to live life. But, after forty-nine years, we can shout loud and proud as representatives of the unborn, in ear of the establishment and the leftists, "free at last! free at last, thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"

Now, don't be fooled. This doesn't mean that the fight against abortion is over. Since the overruling of Wade, the alarm has been triggered for blue states and Democrats as they seek to reinstitute Wade. Already the president is attempting to turn back the decision. But the work for life is beginning to become recognized nationally and legally. This decision rightfully so brings the power back into the hands of the states and of the people. But more importantly, this decision brings the focus back to life itself. Life is a God-given gift, one no human being deserves to take. Life begins at conception and continues even after birth. The life of a person is so valuable, and it is the intrinsic value of a person which makes their being here all the more important. You matter. They matter. Life matters. To famously quote Horton Hears a Who, "a person's a person, no matter how small" (Dr. Suess, Horton Hears a Who). And no one can or should determine the life of a person. I thank God for the protection of life, for the value of life, and for the breath of life itself.

"Well, what I -- what I saw was this baby fighting. And I had flashes in my head of my own daughter. I remembered having an ultrasound at 12 weeks with my own daughter. And I just was thinking, "What am I doing?" I was thinking, "I've never seen this before." And Planned Parenthood really tries to instill in their employees and the women that are coming in for abortions that this is not a baby, that this is just a mass of cells. You know, don't say "baby" in the clinic. Don't say "baby" to the women coming in for an abortion. And so you begin to believe that. You begin to believe that it's not a life."

-Abby Johnson, in a 2009 interview with O'Reilly Factor

"For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well. My frame wasn’t hidden from you, when I was made in secret, woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my body. In your book they were all written, the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there were none of them. How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is their sum! If I would count them, they are more in number than the sand. When I wake up, I am still with you."

-Psalm 139:13-18 (WEB)

So what should we do in the meantime? We must continue to fight for life. We must continue to choose life and help others do the same. We must comfort young mothers and guide them in life. We must comfort young fathers and guide them in life. We must continue to fight tooth-and-nail for the continued rights of the unborn. We must continue to champion life, ultimately pointing to the God who gave the life. We must continue to(firmly but peaceably) assert ourselves in the workplace, in the home, in the schools, in the colleges. Choose life and help proclaim for the unborn, "free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"
